How to Organise and Prioritise Prior To Studying In the UK

If you are considering studying in the UK and you live outside of Europe then you have to organise many things prior to coming to the UK. I have listed the most important tasks so that you have got an overview.

Get your visa!

International students must apply for a tier 4 student visa before they come to the UK. When applying for this visa, there are some requirements you need to fulfil as the visa is based upon a point system. If you obtain 40 points, then you are entitled to the visa. The points can be obtained by having a letter of acceptance from the university you have applied for. This letter can state the official offer or the conditional offer. Besides this, you must be able to show that you have got enough financial resources to ensure that you can pay for your course and living expenses.

The English Language

If you decide to study in the UK, then being able to speak the language is a must. When applying for you visa, you must also include the results of an English test that clearly states your writing, speaking, listening and reading skills. These results must be above a certain standard, in order to qualify for the visa. If you do not speak English that well, I would suggest starting surrounding yourself with English only, i.e. listen to English radio, read English books and watch English films. Practise is a must prior to taking the English test. You can also find additional exercises on the internet.

Find a flat

The last important thing to consider prior to coming to the UK is the type of property you will be living in. You can decide to live with fellow flatmates or alone. If you come from a wealthy family, then living by yourself would be a good option. If you do not have a high budget, then try finding a flat that you can share. You should arrange this as soon as possible by looking at different properties and calling up the letting agencies for appointments. Prior to this, you should have booked your flight to the UK so that you know when you are going to be there in order to attend these viewings. Don’t be shy in negotiating the rent if you feel it is too much, they might cut you a deal.
